Khomas

Up until recently Namibia was divided up into 13 regions, the division of Kavango into Kavango West and Kavango East now makes up 14 regions in total. When writing about the Khomas Region, most people centre their attention on the fact that it is the home of Namibia's Capital, Windhoek. While this is true, along with the fact that Khomas is the most densely populated region in Namibia, there is so much more to this land locked region. The region gets its name from the Khomas Hochland mountain range or highlands. This high plateau landscape, with its rolling hills and high mountain ranges, dominates the region and also contains Namibia's second highest mountain, the Auasberg, at 2,479 m.

Approximately 40km to the east of Windhoek, the highlands turn into vast plains before slowly dropping down to the flat lowlands of the Omaheke Region which borders on Botswana. The mountainous terrain at high altitudes makes the region one of the coldest during winter, which often comes with sub-zero night temperatures. It is also the reason for the Hosea Kutako International Airport being situated in rural surroundings, some 50km east of Windhoek.

The Khomas Region is home to a number of different attractions including, Deadvlei which is a huge salt pan created about 900 - 1000 years ago, the NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Dune 45 is an 85 meters high dune with a climb that is well worth the effort as from the top you will be spoilt with the incredible panoramic view of Dune Valley, Katutura Township, Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve, Heroes Acre, Owela Museum, the National Museum of Namibia, and the National Botanic Garden of Namibia, to name just a few.
