The Schoemanskloof Valley lies on the Drakensberg Escarpment between Montrose and Machadodorp. This is an area of beautiful subtropical forests and waterfalls, and Schoemanskloof is a particularly breathtaking part of South Africa. From the nearby Kwena Dam, the Crocodile River flows eastwards through the scenic Schoemanskloof valley towards Nelspruit. On leaving the valley, the Crocodile River is joined at the Montrose Falls by a major tributary, the Elands River. Nine species of fish have been recorded in the river between the Kwena Dam and the Montrose falls. Below the falls the Crocodile River passes through intensely cultivated agricultural lands en route to Nelspruit. Some 23 km after Nelspruit the river enters the scenic boulder strewn Krokodilpoort (Crocodile Gorge). Schoemanskloof is an area of undisturbed natural beauty that is just not to be missed. Nearby attractions include the Sudwala Caves, the Sterkspruit Nature Reserve and the Kwena Dam. There is excellent fishing in this area.
