Polokwane

Polokwane, formerly known as Pietersburg, is Limpopo’s lively provincial capital and an important gateway to the northern reaches of South Africa. Set amid rolling bushveld and open plains, the city combines a practical modern character with a history stretching back to the nineteenth century.

The city was established as Pietersburg in 1886 by Voortrekkers and developed as a regional centre for farming, trade and transport. Today, reminders of its past can be found at the Polokwane Museum, housed in a former Dutch Reformed Church, and the Hugh Exton Photographic Museum, where historic images provide a fascinating glimpse into the town’s earlier years.

Nature is never far away. The Polokwane Game Reserve, on the city’s outskirts, protects a substantial tract of savannah and is home to species including white rhino, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope. Visitors can explore by vehicle, bicycle or on foot, making it an appealing place to experience Limpopo’s wildlife without travelling deep into the bush. The Polokwane Bird and Reptile Park provides another opportunity to encounter local fauna.

For shoppers and food lovers, the city has a wide selection of restaurants, cafés and retail centres, while its position makes it a convenient base for exploring attractions farther afield. The nearby Makapan Valley, associated with important archaeological discoveries, offers a deeper connection with the region’s ancient human history.

At the heart of the Capricorn Region, Polokwane is more than a stopover. It is a useful introduction to Limpopo’s landscapes, wildlife and layered history, with the comforts of a modern city providing a welcome counterpoint to the surrounding bushveld.
