Olifantsnek is a small settlement near Rustenburg, tucked into the dramatic Magaliesberg landscape where rocky hills rise above the Hex River valley. Best known for its dam and mountain pass, it offers a scenic rural setting only a short distance from the attractions and amenities of Rustenburg.
The name Olifantsnek is Afrikaans for ‘elephant's neck’. One explanation is that the mountain overlooking the area resembles an elephant's head, neck and trunk when viewed from certain directions. Another possibility is that the name recalls wild elephants that once roamed the region. The name therefore reflects both the area's striking geology and its natural history.
Olifantsnek Dam is the area's principal landmark. Completed in the late 1920s, the dam was built across the Hex River primarily for irrigation and remains a popular recreational setting. Fishing, sailing and relaxing beside the water are among the activities associated with the reservoir, while the surrounding Magaliesberg provides an impressive backdrop.
The area also has an intriguing connection with the Anglo-Boer War. A historic blockhouse can still be seen on one of the hills overlooking the dam, a reminder of the military importance of the mountain passes during the conflict. The wider Magaliesberg was the scene of several battles, making the landscape particularly interesting for those fascinated by South African history.
The short Olifantsnek Pass on the R24 is another attraction, winding through the mountains and providing striking views of the surrounding countryside. It is a popular scenic route for motorists and motorcyclists.
Olifantsnek lies in the Eastern Region of North West, where the Magaliesberg, farming landscapes and Rustenburg's mining country come together. For travellers, it is an appealing stop for scenic drives, fishing, mountain views and a glimpse into the area's military past.
