Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve is a tranquil wildlife retreat on the banks of the Olifants River, about 35 kilometres from Hoedspruit. Covering roughly 1,000 hectares, this private reserve combines classic Lowveld bushveld with magnificent views towards the Drakensberg Mountains, offering a peaceful alternative to the larger and busier safari destinations nearby.
The name Ndlovumzi is derived from local African languages and is associated with “elephant”, fittingly reflecting the strong connection between the area and the great herds that roam the Lowveld. Unlike some of the region’s large commercial reserves, Ndlovumzi is a privately owned wildlife estate comprising individual properties, with conservation central to the management of the natural environment.
The Olifants River forms the reserve’s northern boundary and is one of its most attractive features. Its banks are lined with large sycamore figs, marula, jackalberry and tamboti trees, creating a rich habitat for birds and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy guided bush walks and explore the river environment, where tracks, plants, insects and smaller creatures reveal a fascinating side of the bush often missed from a vehicle.
Wildlife includes giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, nyala, waterbuck, impala, warthog and other antelope, while the reserve is also noted for its impressive birdlife. A raised viewing point on the southern side provides sweeping views across the bush towards the Olifants River and makes an excellent spot for watching the sunset.
Within the Kruger National Park & Mopani Region, Ndlovumzi offers a more intimate experience of the Lowveld. Its combination of river scenery, mountain views, abundant wildlife and quiet bushveld atmosphere makes it particularly appealing to travellers who prefer nature at a gentler pace, with Hoedspruit and the region’s major safari attractions conveniently close by.
