Maltahohe Accommodation

Maltahöhe is a small, characterful settlement in southern Namibia, surrounded by wide-open plains, rugged hills and the muted colours of the Namibian interior. Established during the German colonial era, it developed as an agricultural and administrative centre and today provides a quiet glimpse into the history and landscapes of the country’s remote south.

The town’s unusual name combines the surname of German settler Henning von Burgsdorff’s wife, Malte, with the German word ‘Höhe’, meaning ‘height’ or ‘high ground’. The settlement was founded in 1899 and named after Malte von Burgsdorff, whose husband was closely involved in the establishment of the local trading and agricultural community.

Maltahöhe’s history is reflected in several old buildings and landmarks. The small Lutheran church is among the town’s notable historic structures, while the old police station and other remnants of the German colonial period provide atmospheric reminders of an era when this isolated outpost was connected to the wider colonial administration. The town also has strong associations with Namibia’s early transport routes, once serving as an important stop for travellers and goods moving through the harsh southern interior.

The surrounding countryside offers a different kind of attraction. Maltahöhe sits near the transition between the central highlands and the Namib Desert, with rocky ridges, dry valleys and open plains providing excellent scenery for self-drive exploration and photography. Wildlife such as springbok and gemsbok is well adapted to the arid conditions, while the clear, dry air makes the region particularly appealing for stargazing.

For travellers, Maltahöhe is perhaps most valuable as a base for exploring the remarkable landscapes farther west, including the Namib-Naukluft area and the famous dunes around Sossusvlei. Situated in the Hardap Region, it also offers an opportunity to slow down and experience the understated character of a small Namibian settlement, where history, isolation and dramatic scenery are all part of the appeal.
