The Kruger National Park Area encompasses one of South Africa’s most celebrated wilderness landscapes, stretching across a vast expanse of bushveld, woodland, rivers and open savannah in northeastern Limpopo. It is a destination where wildlife is the main attraction, but ancient archaeological sites, dramatic scenery and a long conservation history add depth to the safari experience.
The park was established in 1898 as the Sabie Game Reserve, created under President Paul Kruger to protect dwindling wildlife populations from hunting. It was later expanded and renamed the Kruger National Park in 1926, following the consolidation of several protected areas. The name honours Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic and an influential figure in the park’s early history.
Visitors can choose from self-drive safaris, guided game drives and walking trails, with the chance to encounter the Big Five alongside giraffe, zebra, hippo, cheetah and numerous antelope species. Waterholes and rivers are particularly rewarding places to pause, while keen birdwatchers can look for everything from colourful bee-eaters to large raptors and storks.
The northern parts of the park offer a distinctly different atmosphere from the busier southern areas. Mopane woodland dominates much of the landscape, while the Luvuvhu, Shingwedzi and Olifants rivers provide important wildlife corridors. Pafuri and Crooks Corner are especially memorable, combining rich biodiversity with fascinating stories of traders, hunters and early travellers.
The Kruger National Park & Mopani Region provides access to some of these northern landscapes, as well as nearby private reserves and cultural attractions. Whether travelling for a weekend or embarking on a longer safari, the area offers the timeless appeal of Africa at its wildest: wide skies, ancient trees and the thrill of never knowing what might appear around the next bend.
