Kleinbaai is a small coastal settlement near Gansbaai, facing the cold Atlantic waters of Walker Bay and surrounded by rugged cliffs, fynbos and open countryside. Once a quiet fishing community, it has become internationally known for marine wildlife experiences and its proximity to some of the most dramatic scenery on the southern Cape coast.
The name Kleinbaai simply means ‘Little Bay’ in Afrikaans, describing the small sheltered inlet around which the settlement developed. The surrounding coastline has long supported fishing communities, while the sheltered waters and rich marine life continue to shape the area's identity.
Kleinbaai is particularly famous for shark-cage diving, although conditions and regulations can vary. The area has historically attracted visitors hoping to see great white sharks, and the waters around nearby Dyer Island remain important for marine research and conservation. Boat trips can also provide opportunities to see seals, dolphins and seabirds.
The coastline itself is well worth exploring. Nearby Walker Bay Nature Reserve and the fynbos-covered hills offer opportunities for walking and photography, while the rocky shores provide spectacular views across the ocean. During winter and spring, southern right whales can often be spotted in the wider bay.
A short drive away, Gansbaai provides additional attractions, including the historic fishing harbour and access to boat-based wildlife excursions. The nearby village of De Kelders is also known for coastal caves and archaeological sites associated with early human habitation.
Kleinbaai lies in the Overberg/Whale Coast region, an area celebrated for its rugged coastline, marine wildlife and exceptional fynbos. Its position near Gansbaai and Walker Bay makes it a convenient base for exploring the southern Cape's natural attractions.

2. Whale Watching
Experience: The Whale Coast is famous for whale watching, particularly between June and December when southern right whales migrate to the area to calve and nurse their young.
- Boat Tours: Various operators offer boat-based whale watching tours departing from Kleinbaai and nearby Gansbaai. These tours provide a closer view of the whales, as well as other marine life like dolphins and seals.
- Land-Based Viewing: For a more relaxed experience, you can watch whales from the shore. De Kelders, just a short drive from Kleinbaai, offers excellent viewpoints for spotting whales.
- Best Times: Early morning or late afternoon are often the best times for whale watching as the sea is usually calmer.
3. Dyer Island and Geyser Rock
