Kathu

Kathu is a modern mining town surrounded by the distinctive red sands, thornveld and open plains of the Northern Cape. Known as the “Iron Ore Capital of the Northern Cape”, it combines a thriving mining industry with an extraordinary archaeological heritage that reaches back tens of thousands of years.

The town’s name comes from the Setswana words “ga” and “tshu”, commonly interpreted as “the town under the trees”. The name reflects the dense camel-thorn woodland that once covered much of the area. Kathu developed rapidly in the 1960s after large iron-ore deposits were discovered in the surrounding hills, transforming what had been a sparsely populated area into an important mining centre.

One of the most remarkable attractions near Kathu is the Kathu Pan archaeological site, where evidence of human activity stretching back more than a million years has been uncovered. Stone tools found here provide an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of early humans and demonstrate that the area was an important prehistoric landscape long before modern settlement. The site is part of a wider archaeological landscape associated with the Middle Stone Age and early human technological development.

The mining industry remains central to Kathu’s identity. The enormous iron-ore deposits around the town form part of the geological wealth of the Kalahari manganese and iron-ore belt. While active mining areas are not generally open for casual exploration, their scale can be appreciated from the surrounding landscape, where enormous mine dumps and industrial infrastructure contrast with the natural veld.

Beyond mining and archaeology, Kathu offers opportunities to experience the Kalahari environment. The surrounding thornveld supports springbok, gemsbok and other hardy wildlife, while birdwatching and scenic drives are rewarding ways to explore the countryside. Clear evenings provide excellent conditions for stargazing.

Kathu lies in the Kalahari & Diamond Fields Region, where ancient geology continues to shape modern life. For travellers, the town offers an unusual combination of prehistoric archaeology, mineral wealth and Kalahari scenery. It is a place where the story of humanity, the Earth’s geological past and modern industry can all be traced within the same remarkable landscape.
