Just north of Bela-Bela, Intaba-Indle Wilderness Estate offers a peaceful bushveld escape where homes, wildlife and natural surroundings exist in close proximity. Set on a sizeable tract of land with hills, open veld and indigenous vegetation, the estate is designed around the idea of enjoying nature without sacrificing the comforts of a private residential retreat.
The name Intaba-Indle is drawn from isiZulu: “intaba” means “mountain”, while “indle” refers to wilderness or the wild. The name is particularly appropriate for an estate set on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding bushveld and Waterberg landscape. It is not a traditional town, but a private residential wildlife estate that has become part of the Bela-Bela area.
Wildlife is central to the experience. The estate is home to a variety of plains game, including giraffe, kudu, zebra, waterbuck, impala, blesbok and warthog, while the absence of dangerous game allows residents and guests to explore parts of the property on foot or by mountain bike. Birdwatching is another highlight, with more than 200 species recorded on the estate, making a leisurely walk as rewarding for birders as it is for nature lovers.
A scenic dam provides a particularly attractive focal point. Fishing is permitted on a catch-and-release basis, while the water attracts birds and adds to the sense of tranquillity. The dam also has an interesting wartime connection: it was constructed during the Second World War by Italian prisoners of war and once served as an important water supply for Bela-Bela.
Intaba-Indle lies within the Waterberg Region, renowned for its mountains, wildlife and ancient landscapes. Its proximity to Bela-Bela’s famous thermal springs makes it possible to combine a wilderness stay with spa and leisure experiences.
