Kromdraai, near Bela-Bela, is a quiet rural settlement surrounded by the open bushveld, farms and game country that give this corner of Limpopo its distinctive character. Rather than a conventional tourist town, it offers a glimpse of the countryside beyond Bela-Bela, where agriculture, wildlife and wide horizons remain central to everyday life.
The name Kromdraai is Afrikaans for “crooked turn”, traditionally referring to a bend or unusual turn in a natural feature such as a river or track. Place names of this kind are common in South Africa, often describing a noticeable feature that helped early farmers and travellers identify a particular locality. Kromdraai itself is associated with a collection of agricultural holdings and a distinctly rural community, with farming and game-related activities prominent in the surrounding area.
For visitors, the attraction is principally the landscape. The countryside around Kromdraai is well suited to leisurely drives, birdwatching and wildlife photography, while nearby guest farms, lodges and private reserves provide opportunities for game viewing and outdoor activities. The area’s mixture of open grassland, bushveld and scattered hills is particularly appealing in the early morning and late afternoon, when the light brings out the colours and contours of the landscape.
Kromdraai is also conveniently placed for exploring Bela-Bela, whose famous mineral springs have drawn visitors for generations. The springs were known to local Tswana communities long before the development of the modern town, and the name Bela-Bela means “boiling-boiling”, describing the hot water rising naturally from the ground. Today, visitors can combine a stay in the countryside with the town’s spas, thermal pools and other leisure attractions.
The settlement lies within the Waterberg Region, an area celebrated for its wildlife, mountains and rich archaeological heritage. Ancient rock-art sites and traces of early human occupation occur across the broader landscape, adding historical depth to the natural surroundings.
Kromdraai is therefore best appreciated as a peaceful rural base rather than a destination filled with major attractions – a place to slow down and enjoy the understated beauty of the Waterberg bushveld.
Here are five things to see and do in and around Kromdraai:
1. Mabalingwe Nature Reserve:
2. Adventures with Elephants:
3. Bela-Bela Hot Springs:
4. Bambelela Wildlife Care and Vervet Monkey Rehabilitation Farm:
5. Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm:
These attractions offer a mix of wildlife experiences, relaxation, and educational opportunities, making Kromdraai and its surroundings an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers in the Limpopo Province.
