Bela-Bela is one of Limpopo’s best-known spa destinations, where warm mineral springs, bushveld scenery and a long history of visitors seeking the restorative qualities of its waters come together. Formerly known as Warmbaths, the town lies among the rolling hills and wildlife-rich landscapes of the Waterberg, making it an appealing stop for both relaxation and outdoor adventure.
The name Bela-Bela comes from the Tswana term meaning “boiling water”, a reference to the naturally hot springs around which the town developed. The earlier name Warmbaths was a direct English rendering of the same feature. The springs attracted attention during the nineteenth century, and the settlement became increasingly associated with health resorts and leisure. Today, the hot mineral waters remain the town’s principal attraction, with spa facilities, pools and resorts providing a popular escape for visitors.
Beyond its thermal waters, Bela-Bela makes a convenient base for exploring the surrounding bushveld. Game viewing is a major draw, with private reserves in the area offering opportunities to see giraffe, zebra, antelope and numerous bird species. Nature lovers can also enjoy hiking, cycling and scenic drives through the countryside, while nearby dams provide opportunities for fishing and other outdoor activities.
