Hoedjiesbaai
Hoedjiesbaai is a historic coastal settlement on the shores of Saldanha Bay, where the sheltered waters of one of South Africa’s finest natural harbours meet the rugged West Coast. Once a modest fishing hamlet, it has become part of greater Saldanha, but its old maritime character and heritage remain an important part of the area’s identity.
The name Hoedjiesbaai is Afrikaans for ‘little hat bay’, traditionally associated with the distinctive Hoedjieskop overlooking the settlement. The small community developed around the bay as fishing became an important source of employment and food, and the settlement was formally recognised as a village in 1916. By 1942, its village management board had been renamed the Saldanha Bay Village Management Board, reflecting the growing prominence of the larger settlement.
Hoedjieskop is one of the best places to appreciate the area's setting. A short walking route leads towards viewpoints overlooking Saldanha Bay, with fishing boats, harbour activity and the broad blue waters creating an impressive panorama. The hill also has heritage significance, with historic fishermen’s cottages and other remnants of the old community adding character to the landscape.
The bay itself offers plenty for visitors, from fishing and boating to kayaking, diving and birdwatching. The cold Benguela Current supports an exceptionally productive marine environment, while the sheltered waters attract a variety of seabirds. During the right season, whales can also be spotted along the wider coastline.
Hoedjiesbaai has an intriguing maritime history. Saldanha Bay was used as a safe anchorage by European vessels for centuries, while fishing and farming remained the main local activities for much of its early development. During the Second World War, the strategic importance of the harbour led to the construction of coastal defences.
Today, Hoedjiesbaai forms part of the Cape West Coast region, renowned for its fishing heritage, rugged coastline, fynbos and spectacular spring wildflowers. For travellers, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the origins of modern Saldanha, where a small fishing community grew beside a remarkable natural harbour.
