Gravelotte Accommodation

Gravelotte is a small settlement in Limpopo’s warm Lowveld, surrounded by bushveld, citrus farms and the wide-open landscapes of the province’s north-east. Its rural atmosphere and position along the route between Tzaneen and Phalaborwa make it a useful stop for travellers heading towards the Kruger National Park.

The town’s unusual name has European origins. Gravelotte was named after Gravelotte, a village in north-eastern France associated with the Battle of Gravelotte during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The South African settlement developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when farming and transport routes began shaping the area.

Agriculture remains important today, particularly citrus production, and the surrounding orchards provide a vivid green contrast to the drier bushveld. The landscape is also well suited to birdwatching, with a variety of species found around farms, river courses and patches of indigenous vegetation. Early morning drives are particularly rewarding, when the heat is lower and wildlife is more active.

Gravelotte is conveniently placed for exploring several of Limpopo’s major attractions. Phalaborwa, one of the principal gateways to the Kruger National Park, lies within easy reach, while the Blyde River Canyon and the spectacular scenery of the eastern escarpment can be explored on longer excursions. Private game reserves in the surrounding Lowveld offer opportunities for guided drives and wildlife viewing.

As part of the Kruger National Park & Mopani Region, Gravelotte occupies an interesting position between agricultural country and some of South Africa’s finest wildlife landscapes. Its appeal lies in this sense of transition: cultivated fields gradually give way to bushveld, rocky hills and game country.

For travellers, Gravelotte is best enjoyed as a relaxed rural stop – a place to pause, enjoy the Lowveld scenery and use as a springboard for adventures farther north.
