Churchhaven

Churchhaven is a tiny historic settlement tucked beside the tranquil waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, within the West Coast National Park. With its cluster of simple cottages, sandy tracks and sweeping views across the lagoon, it feels wonderfully removed from the bustle of modern life and offers a glimpse of an older, slower way of living.

The name Churchhaven is linked to St Peter’s Church, which was built here after land was made available for a church in the late 19th century. The settlement itself developed from the small fishing and farming communities that grew along the lagoon during the 1800s and early 1900s. Residents traditionally relied on fishing, small-scale farming, hunting and gathering, creating a largely self-sufficient community.

Today, Churchhaven is prized for its remarkably well-preserved character. The modest cottages, many reflecting traditional Cape vernacular architecture, sit naturally within the landscape, while the absence of commercial development adds to its peaceful atmosphere. The village is privately managed and access is restricted, so it is important for visitors to respect local arrangements rather than treating it as an open tourist attraction.

The surrounding lagoon and wetlands are the real draw. Birdwatchers can look for flamingos, waders and other waterbirds, while the calm waters and surrounding dunes create beautiful opportunities for photography. Nearby viewpoints offer broad panoramas across the lagoon towards Geelbek and Langebaan.
