Suurbraak Accommodation

Suurbraak is a peaceful historic village nestled beneath the Langeberg Mountains, surrounded by orchards, fynbos and clear mountain streams. Its combination of beautiful scenery, old mission buildings and relaxed rural atmosphere makes it one of the more distinctive inland destinations of the southern Cape.

The village was established in 1812 by the Moravian Church as a mission station, although its history reaches back further through the communities who lived in the area. The name Suurbraak is generally associated with the Dutch word “zuurbraak”, referring to the sour or acidic water found in the local streams. The settlement was originally known as Xairu, a Khoekhoe name, before the Moravian mission developed.

Suurbraak's historic character is best experienced by wandering along its quiet streets, where old cottages, gardens and mission-era buildings reflect the village's past. The Moravian church remains an important landmark, while the surrounding properties retain much of the traditional character that developed around the mission.

The Langeberg provides a spectacular backdrop and offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and exploring mountain streams. The Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, just outside the village, protects indigenous forest and fynbos and is particularly rewarding for walkers and birdwatchers. The reserve's ancient forest contains towering yellowwoods and a variety of smaller indigenous trees.

Suurbraak is also close to Swellendam, one of South Africa's oldest towns, where visitors can explore the Drostdy Museum and a collection of historic Cape Dutch and Georgian buildings. The route through the Langeberg offers beautiful scenery, particularly after winter rains when the countryside turns green.

Suurbraak lies in the Overberg/Whale Coast region, although its setting is distinctly mountainous and inland. The village provides an appealing contrast to the region's better-known coastal destinations.
