Retreat

Retreat is a well-established suburb in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, ideally positioned between the Constantiaberg Mountains and the False Bay coastline. Its central location makes it a convenient base for exploring the southern peninsula, with easy access to beaches, nature reserves and some of the Cape’s oldest wine estates.

The suburb is believed to have taken its name from the British military retreat following the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795, an event that marked the beginning of British control of the Cape. This historical connection gives Retreat a distinctive place in the story of Cape Town’s colonial past.

Today, visitors are within minutes of several outstanding attractions. The Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve, partly located in Retreat, is a haven for birdlife and offers opportunities for kayaking, sailing, fishing and peaceful walks along its shoreline. Nearby Muizenberg is famous for its colourful beach huts, surfing culture and family-friendly beaches, while the historic Constantia Wine Valley invites visitors to explore elegant estates, award-winning wines and beautiful Cape Dutch architecture.

Combining history, natural beauty and excellent access to the southern suburbs, Retreat offers an authentic glimpse into everyday Cape Town while placing many of the region’s finest attractions within easy reach.
