Outapi Accommodation

Outapi is a lively town in northern Namibia, surrounded by the flat plains, seasonal waterways and mopane woodland of the Cuvelai landscape. As the capital of the Omusati Region, it serves as an important administrative, commercial and cultural centre, while its location makes it a useful base for exploring the history and traditions of northern Namibia.

The name Outapi is derived from Oshiwambo, although its precise meaning is not consistently recorded. Like many northern Namibian place names, it reflects the area's indigenous linguistic heritage and the long history of communities living across the Cuvelai.

One of Outapi’s most important attractions is Ombalantu Baobab, an enormous hollow baobab tree on the outskirts of town. The tree has historical significance and was once used as a shelter, while the surrounding area has become a popular heritage site. Its enormous trunk provides an evocative reminder of how people have adapted to the northern landscape.

Outapi is also associated with the history of the Oukwanyama and neighbouring Ovambo communities. The town and surrounding area provide opportunities to learn about traditional culture, agriculture and the region’s complex colonial and independence-era history. The landscape changes considerably with the seasons. During summer rains, temporary pans and channels fill with water, turning the countryside green and attracting abundant birdlife. In the dry season, the flat horizon, scattered makalani palms and hardy vegetation create a very different but equally distinctive scene.

Outapi lies in the Omusati Region, whose name comes from the Oshiwambo word for the mopane tree. The region forms part of the wider Cuvelai system, where seasonal water has shaped settlement and agriculture for generations.
