Ngoma

Ngoma is a small border settlement in north-eastern Namibia, positioned beside the Chobe River close to the borders with Botswana and Zambia. Surrounded by floodplains, woodland and wildlife-rich river country, it provides a convenient gateway into one of Namibia’s most scenic and biodiverse corners.

The name Ngoma is widely used across southern and central Africa and has roots in several Bantu languages, often referring to a drum or traditional music. In this setting, the name reflects the cultural heritage of the communities living along the Zambezi and Chobe waterways, although the precise origin of the settlement’s name is not firmly documented.

The Chobe River is the main attraction, and boat trips provide excellent opportunities to experience the area's wildlife. Hippos and crocodiles are common, while elephants frequently gather along the riverbanks, particularly during the dry season. The floodplains also support large numbers of antelope and an impressive variety of waterbirds.

Ngoma is ideally placed for travellers continuing into Botswana, with the Chobe National Park lying just across the border. The Ngoma Bridge provides an important road connection between Namibia and Botswana, making the settlement a strategic transport point as well as a wildlife gateway.

The surrounding landscape is particularly attractive at sunrise and sunset, when the waterways and floodplains take on warm colours. Birdwatchers can look for fish eagles, kingfishers, herons and other species associated with the river environment. Angling is also popular in the wider area, although local regulations and conservation requirements should always be observed.

Ngoma lies in the Zambezi Region, formerly known as the Caprivi Region. Unlike Namibia’s arid interior, this narrow north-eastern region is characterised by rivers, wetlands, forests and floodplains, creating some of the country's richest habitats for wildlife.

For travellers, Ngoma offers an appealing combination of wilderness and accessibility. Its border location, proximity to the Chobe River and easy access to neighbouring Botswana make it an excellent stop for those exploring the wildlife-rich waterways of Namibia’s north-east.
