Langstrand (Long Beach), Namibia, is a 15-kilometre stretch of sandy beach situated on the Atlantic coast of the country half way between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The beach is sheltered from the prevailing southwest wind and storms by Pelican Point, a promontory behind which the harbour of Walvis Bay is situated. Long Beach has a gradual gradient into the surf and is safe for swimming. At the southern end of Long Beach a small resort has gradually developed sporting a jetty and promenade, picnic spots and a restaurant. A small cluster of houses has been built here.
Long Beach is a truly wonderful beach to visit. It is wild and uncluttered by tourists. The view from the beach is one of unbroken sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see. Sunsets seen from the beach can be really magnificent. Bird lovers may be lucky to see the rare Damara Tern, which breeds and roosts in the area.
Langstrand, also known as Long Beach, in Namibia is indeed an intriguing place.
Here are five interesting things about it:
1. Longest Beach in Namibia: Langstrand is famous for having one of the longest and most picturesque beaches in Namibia. Stretching along the Atlantic Ocean coastline, it offers expansive views and a serene atmosphere.
2. Adventure Sports Hub: The area around Langstrand is popular for adventure sports enthusiasts. Activities like quad biking, sandboarding, and kite surfing are common due to the vast sand dunes and windy conditions.
3. Flora and Fauna: Despite its seemingly barren appearance, Langstrand is home to unique flora and fauna adapted to the harsh desert environment. The area supports a variety of bird species and occasional sightings of wildlife such as jackals and lizards.
4. Shipwrecks: Namibia's Skeleton Coast, where Langstrand is located, is notorious for its shipwrecks. The coastline is littered with the remains of vessels that fell victim to treacherous seas and foggy conditions, adding a haunting allure to the area.
5. German Influence: Like much of Namibia, Langstrand has a strong German influence due to its colonial history. This is reflected in the architecture, cuisine, and even some cultural aspects that can be observed in the local communities.
These aspects combine to make Langstrand a unique destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those interested in history and culture.
