Kings Hill Accommodation

Kings Hill is a residential area of Harrismith (iNtabazwe), lying beneath the imposing Platberg in the eastern Free State. Its setting combines the convenience of a town neighbourhood with expansive views towards the surrounding grasslands and mountains, making it a pleasant base for exploring the wider Harrismith district.

Harrismith was founded in 1849 and named after Sir Harry Smith, the British governor of the Cape Colony. The town developed as an agricultural and commercial centre, and its broad streets, historic churches and older buildings still reflect its nineteenth-century origins. Kings Hill forms part of the greater Harrismith urban area, alongside iNtabazwe, and provides easy access to the town's shops, services and recreational facilities.

Platberg is the defining natural attraction. Rising dramatically above Harrismith, the mountain is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, photography and birdwatching. The surrounding grasslands are particularly attractive in summer, when they become lush and green, while winter brings crisp skies and golden scenery.

Visitors can also explore Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve, a scenic destination offering fishing, boating, birdwatching and hiking against a backdrop of mountains and open veld. Further afield, the road towards Golden Gate Highlands National Park passes through some of the eastern Free State's most spectacular landscapes, with sandstone cliffs and rolling mountain country.

Within the Northern & Eastern Free State Region, Kings Hill provides a convenient residential base for discovering Harrismith and its surroundings. Its appeal lies less in specific attractions within the neighbourhood than in its access to the area's combination of history, outdoor recreation and dramatic mountain scenery.
