Hawston
Hawston is a coastal village on the shores of Walker Bay, just east of Hermanus, where a long sandy beach meets rolling hills and the dramatic mountains of the southern Overberg. With its strong community character and beautiful seaside setting, it offers a more relaxed alternative to the better-known attractions of Hermanus.
The village was named after Sir John Hawston, a British colonial official and former Lieutenant-Governor of the Cape Colony. The settlement grew during the 19th century and developed a strong connection with fishing and agriculture, traditions that remain part of its character today.
Hawston Beach is the village's main natural attraction, providing a broad stretch of sand ideal for walking, fishing and enjoying views across Walker Bay. The surrounding coastline is particularly scenic, while the waters of the bay are visited by southern right whales during winter and spring. Dolphins and other marine life can also occasionally be seen offshore.
Hawston is also known for its rich cultural heritage. The village has a long history as a coloured community, and local traditions, music and community events form an important part of its identity. Visitors interested in the area's history can explore the older parts of the village and learn more about the communities that have shaped the southern Overberg.
Hermanus is only a short drive away and offers excellent whale watching, the scenic Cliff Path, galleries, restaurants and the Old Harbour. Nature lovers can also explore Fernkloof Nature Reserve, where hiking trails wind through exceptionally diverse fynbos.
