George Area
The George area lies between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, combining forests, mountain passes, farmland and a growing coastal population. Centred on George, the area is one of the Garden Route’s main hubs and a convenient base for exploring the spectacular scenery of the southern Cape.
George was established in 1811 as a settlement around the British military outpost of York, and was named after King George III of Britain. The town grew partly because of the need for timber and agricultural supplies, with the surrounding indigenous forests providing an important resource during the Cape's early colonial period.
The Outeniqua Mountains dominate the landscape and offer some of the area's most rewarding scenery. The historic Montagu Pass, completed in 1848, was once the principal route across the mountains and remains an impressive drive and engineering achievement. The Outeniqua Transport Museum in George provides another fascinating glimpse into the region's transport history, with historic locomotives, railway coaches and other memorabilia.
Nature lovers have plenty to explore. The nearby Garden Route Botanical Garden showcases indigenous plants, while trails in the surrounding forests and mountains offer opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and photography.
