Elim
Elim is a historic mission settlement in the rolling countryside of northern Limpopo, surrounded by the distinctive mountains and fertile valleys of the Soutpansberg. With its strong Christian heritage, Venda cultural connections and peaceful rural setting, it offers travellers a fascinating glimpse into an important chapter of the province’s history.
The name Elim comes from the biblical Elim, an oasis mentioned in the Old Testament where the Israelites found water and shelter during their journey through the wilderness. The settlement was established in the 19th century by Swiss missionaries of the Swiss Mission in South Africa, who chose the name to reflect the idea of a place of refuge and renewal. Mission activity subsequently played an important role in education, healthcare and community development in the surrounding area.
The historic Elim Hospital, established by the mission, became an important centre of healthcare in the region, while the mission station itself developed schools, churches and other institutions. Visitors interested in heritage can explore the old mission precinct and appreciate the architecture and atmosphere of a settlement that has retained much of its historic character.
Elim is also close to the beautiful landscapes of the Soutpansberg.
