Louis Trichardt / Makhado

Louis Trichardt, officially known as Makhado, is a scenic town tucked beneath the southern slopes of the Soutpansberg in northern Limpopo. Surrounded by mountains, indigenous woodland and fertile farmland, it makes an appealing base for exploring one of South Africa’s most culturally diverse and geographically dramatic corners.

The town’s modern name honours Makhado, the 19th-century Venda king who ruled from the Soutpansberg area and resisted Boer expansion into his kingdom. The earlier name, Louis Trichardt, commemorated Louis Trichardt, the Voortrekker leader who travelled through the region in the 1830s. The settlement changed names several times after 1994, with Makhado becoming the official name, although Louis Trichardt remains widely used in everyday speech and tourism.

The Soutpansberg is the town’s greatest natural attraction. Rising dramatically above the surrounding plains, the range provides opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and scenic drives. The mountains contain pockets of indigenous forest and support an impressive variety of plant and animal life, while viewpoints reveal expansive panoramas across the Limpopo countryside. The region is also known for its rich birdlife, making the area particularly rewarding for keen birders.

History is never far away. The nearby Mapungubwe National Park is one of the country’s most important archaeological destinations, preserving the remains of an ancient African kingdom that flourished between the 11th and 13th centuries. Closer to town, visitors can explore sites and landscapes associated with the Venda people, whose cultural traditions remain an important part of the area’s identity.

The town itself has a relaxed country atmosphere, with restaurants, cafés, shops and accommodation providing a convenient base for travellers. Its surrounding farms produce fruit, nuts and other agricultural products, and the nearby Levubu Valley is especially fertile.

Within the Vhembe Region, Makhado offers an excellent introduction to northern Limpopo’s combination of mountain scenery, cultural heritage and outdoor adventure. Whether hiking in the Soutpansberg, discovering Venda history or simply enjoying the views from town, visitors quickly discover that this is far more than a convenient stop on the road north.
