Allanridge

Allanridge is a gold mining town in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality of the Free State province in South Africa. It is the main centre of the Lorraine Gold Mining Company and is dominated by the tall headgear and complex reduction works that processes thousands of tons of gold-bearing ore every month.

Allanridge was established as a settlement in 1947 and was named after Allan Roberts whose boreholes proximity to the gold bearing reef was the precursor to the mining in the area. The town layout was designed by town planner William Backhouse, who also planned Welkom. It became a municipality on 21 December 1956 but this changed on the 5 December 2000 when it was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality with the city of Welkom and the towns of Hennenman, Odendaalsrus, Ventersburg and Virginia.

Attractions:
The town has a 9-hole golf club, bowling green, swimming pool and squash courts. Hand-made candles are on sale from a private crafter in town. The town also has its own local woodcarver and her beautiful woodcarvings can be viewed on request.

Allanridge Lake is a vision in pink, since it is the playground of thousands of flamingos. Several other species of less flamboyantly coloured water birds also frequent the lake. The Allan Roberts Prospectors Borehole Memorial is shaped in the form of a key and symbolises the unlocking of the Free State goldfields. An old mine locomotive named Paulina can be seen at the entrance to the mine. The Mynsinkgat Museum on the farm Aandenk chronicles the history of gold mining in and around the town.

The town is also home to Edel Olie Eden Health, which is a family-run factory and it is one of the few in South Africa that produces virgin sunflower oil using a technique that prevents the oil from warming up and losing its potency. This technique also prohibits the use of additives. The oil thus produced is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. The factory also produces an Eden Health Oil Cosmetic Collection of creams and treatment oils.

The Target Gold Mine is a modern mine that uses the deep-mining process to extract gold and is situated in what is known as the Bothaville Gap between two of the worlds biggest gold fields namely those of Welkom and Klerksdorp. Underground tours and visits to the mines foundry/smelting house can be organised on request.
