Welkom

Welkom is the Free State’s second largest town and is South Africa's youngest town. It has been the centre of the gold fields since 1947 – the town was founded after gold was discovered on a farm called St Helena. This little town has kept up with Johannesburg in terms of rate of growth. The town’s roads are so well designed with easy flowing traffic circles, that there are only a few traffic lights. Traffic experts from all over the world have come to study the clever use of traffic circles that contribute to an effortless flow of traffic – this is the reason that Welkom is known as the “circle city”.

There are plenty of tourist activities to do in Welkom. Become immersed in theatre culture when you visit the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre, visit the Gold Museum, go on a mine tour and visit some of the deepest and richest mines, gaze in awe at some of Welkom’s many monuments, take a walk or picnic in one of the parks, cure your need for speed at the Phakisa Raceway or take a trip to the Theronia Pan to view the flocks of birds.

If you're looking for a great place to visit, start here. There is plenty of accommodation in Welkom to choose from!
