Maccauvlei Golf Course

The Maccauvlei Golf Course lies on the banks of the Vaal River in the Vaal Triangle, Gauteng, South Africa. This championship course is known to be one of the best courses and has been host to many big golfing tournaments over the years.

The course was originally built in the early 1920s and owes its existence to Sammy Marks (Samuel Marks, the millionaire entrepreneur who funded the coal mining that helped establish Vereeniging) two sporting sons, Louis and Teddy Marks. They became golfing enthusiasts while they were on holiday at the coast, and decided that establishing a top quality golf course near the town of Vereeniging was a good idea. The first meeting of the club was held on 20th of February 1926. In 1927 the Club hosted a visit from a British golf team, all members of the Royal and Ancient of St. Andrews. They arrived at the Club in December of that year on the first official visit by such a team from overseas to this country. It is also said that in the 1930s Maccauvlei was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as having the largest membership of any Golf Club in the world. In 1999 the course underwent some changes designed by Peter Matkovich

The fairways on this beautiful parkland course which runs alongside the Vaal River are always well kept with superbly manicured greens. The course also has 90 bunkers - including the biggest bunker in South Africa, a 120-meter long desert of sand at the par-four 17th hole. The course is an 18 hole Par 72 and has a length of 6589m. There is also a well stocked Pro Shop with professional advice from professional staff as well as a driving range, putting green, golf carts, pull trolleys, a bar, function facilities, and a halfway house.
The Course is open daily (except Mondays and Christmas day) to members and visitors.
