The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court

A design competition won by Hawke & McKinlay of Cape Town, architects of the Johannesburg City Hall and the Groote Schuur Campus of the University of Cape Town, led to the design of this stately and massive building which was completed in 1906.

The Supreme Court building was erected on the site of Fem Lodge, the former residence of Abraham (Bram) Fischer. (Abraham Fischer was a Prime Minister of the Orange River Colony from 1907 to 1910. He later went on to lead the defense of Nelson Mandela in 1963 and on 23 September 1964, Fischer was arrested for contravening the Suppression of Communism Act)

The building, although massive, is elegant and has been beautifully adorned both inside and out. Yet another reminder of the part Bloemfontein played in building the proud and democratic nation of South Africa
