Eastern Cape, Accommodation, Sundays River Valley

It is here, in the Eastern Cape Sundays River Valley, where Sir James Percy FitzPatrick - author of the famous "Jock of the Bushveld", is buried at 'The Look Out', which offers a spectacular view of the Sundays River Valley below, where thousands of citrus orchards hug the Sundays River. This man of vision was the pioneer of the Eastern Cape fruit industry, which has grown and flourished, along with the many settlements dotted along the Sundays River Valley.

Said to be the fastest flowing river in the country, the Sundays River ambles past the Eastern Cape Addo Elephant Park, and through the Sundays River Valley towards the Indian Ocean. On its journey through this verdant area of the Eastern Cape, the Sundays River passes the Eastern Cape towns of Kirkwood, Sunland and Addo Village, then empties into the Indian Ocean near Colchester, which lies on the banks of the Sundays River just 20 minutes drive from the bustling Eastern Cape town of Port Elizabeth.
The small village of Sundays River itself is nestled amongst rolling hills and sand dunes, and is where many holiday makers from Port Elizabeth and East London come to enjoy the tranquil Sundays River environment, and convenient proximity to beautiful Eastern Cape beaches.

While visiting Eastern Cape Sundays River accommodation, there are many annual festivals which take advantage of the fragrance of orange blossoms filling the air. During the April to September citrus picking season, the Sundays River Valley buzzes with activity, culminating in the annual Sundays River Valley Citrus Festival, which brings locals and visitors onto the banks of the Sundays River, where craft exhibitions, dancing, food and beer tents entertain Eastern Cape holiday-makers and local families alike.

Not to be missed is the annual Addo Rose and Garden Show, with sixteen thousand roses of over forty varieties on display, this much anticipated Eastern Cape event staged around October each year attracts more than 8,000 visitors.

The Eastern Cape Kirkwood Wildlife Festival is the first and only game auction in South Africa, where disease free buffalo from the Addo Elephant Park are for sale. This spectacular annual event includes a mix of over 300 specialist stalls, agricultural, wildlife and mohair expos, and also includes the highly competitive sport of spitting kudu droppings!

For the more energetic, the avid golfer must try out the Kirkwood Golf Club, which boasts an interesting little nine-hole golf course, and for a great place to spend a sporting afternoon, the Addo Polo Club offers polo, tennis, cricket and squash. For the more laid back, 'birders' will enjoy a bird-watching cruise from Colchester to the nearby Alexandria Dunefields, a not-to-be-missed Sundays River activity.

Besides the magnificent citrus farms, the Sundays River Valley also overlooks rich, Eastern Cape game reserve bushveld, and is in close proximity to the Amakhale Game Reserve, Lalibela Game Reserve, Eastern Cape Shamwari Game Park, Sibuya Private Game reserve on the way to Grahamstown and the world famous Eastern Cape Addo Elephant Park - home to the Big 7, including more than 550 elephants, as well as the rare flightless dung beetle exclusive to the Addo Elephant Park area.
