The Slangkop Lighthouse

The Slangkop Lighthouse
The Slankkop Lighthouse is situated in the beautiful town of Kommetjie in Cape Town, South Africa. The lighthouse stands 100 feet tall from base to the balcony and is the tallest iron tower on the South African Coast. The revolving electric light has an approximate candle power of 5 000 000 C.D and this allows it to often remain visible even through thick mist. This lighthouse was commissioned as a safeguard against shipwrecks along the rocky shoreline of the Southern Coast. The Slangkop Lighthouse draws its power from the Cape Municipality and has a back up in case of a power failure.
There are guided tours offered at the Lighthouse where you will get to meet the Senior Lighthouse Keeper and you can climb the spiral staircase to the top of the lighthouse. You will get to learn about the history of the lighthouse and hear many more interesting stories about the lighthouse. The views from above are worth the climb.
