Wesselsbron

50 kilometres from Welkom, in the flat “panneveld” district of the Free State, lies the town of Wesselsbron. Flocks of flamingos and other water birds can be seen during the rainy season, lured here by the water filled pans which characterise the region. These pans dry out during the winter months leaving deposits of mineral salts, hence the name salt pans.

Founded in 1918, Wesselsbron was named in honour of Cornelius Janse Wessels, who as Chief Commander, was in charge of the Boer Siege of Kimberley during The Anglo Boer War.

A small town, serving a prosperous agricultural community, Wesselsbron boasts one of the largest grain silos in the southern hemisphere. The community of Wesselsbron have opened their farms and businesses to the tourist trade.

Visitors can tour the local Clover Cheese factory, where 18 tons of cheese is produced every day, including a prize winning Gouda cheese. Tours can also be arranged to the Geese Farm, the grain silos, a horse breeding station, and a sunflower press.

There are stunningly preserved San paintings on Boskop farm and Game hunting can also be arranged.
