Tauben Glen, Windhoek

Tauben Glen is a residential suburb in the northern part of Windhoek, occupying a gently undulating area beneath the rugged hills that surround Namibia’s capital. Predominantly residential, it offers a quieter side of Windhoek while remaining close to shopping, restaurants and the city’s main attractions.

The name Tauben Glen has German and English roots. “Tauben” is the German word for “pigeons” or “doves”, while “glen” refers to a narrow valley or secluded hollow. The name can therefore be interpreted as “Pigeon Valley” or “Dove Valley”, an evocative description for a neighbourhood set among the valleys and hills of central Namibia. The name reflects the strong German linguistic influence still visible in many Windhoek place names.

Tauben Glen itself is not a major tourist attraction, but its location makes it a useful base for exploring the capital. The surrounding hills offer opportunities for walking, photography and scenic drives, with rocky slopes and dry valleys providing a characteristic Namibian backdrop. Birdwatchers may find a variety of species among the thorn trees and shrubs, particularly after summer rainfall.

The suburb is also within easy reach of Windhoek’s cultural attractions. Visitors can explore museums, historic buildings, craft markets and galleries in the city centre before returning to the quieter surroundings of the northern suburbs. Restaurants and cafés in the wider area provide plenty of opportunities to sample contemporary Namibian cuisine and local produce.

Windhoek’s high elevation and dry climate make the surrounding scenery particularly striking. Summer storms can transform the normally brown landscape into vivid green for a short period, while winter brings crisp air, clear skies and excellent visibility. Sunsets over the surrounding mountains can be spectacular.

Tauben Glen lies in the Khomas Region, the mountainous highland area centred on Windhoek. Its landscape is shaped by rocky ridges, dry river valleys and thornveld, with open country beginning surprisingly close to the urban edge.

For travellers, Tauben Glen is best appreciated as part of the broader Windhoek experience. Its peaceful residential character and attractive setting provide a convenient contrast to the busy city centre, while the surrounding hills offer an immediate reminder that Namibia’s wilderness is never far away.
