Prince Albert

Prince Albert is a quaint town situated at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. It has been described as the guardian of the illustrious Swartberg Pass, the gateway to the Garden Route and Great Karoo.

Some of the Cape Dutch and Victorian houses in the town of Prince Albert are still in excellent condition. Nineteen of them have been declared national monuments. A few examples are at number 5 Deurdrift Street, numbers 1, 5 and 23 Church Street.

For a brief time Prince Albert experienced a gold rush, but the mining proved to be not viable and the prospectors vanished. Artifacts of the gold rush can be seen in the Fransie Pienaar Museum, along with another interesting item, a 30-cm long coffin, said to be found on a the loft of a deserted Prince Albert home. Legend claims it has never been opened.

The town of Prince Albert also played a part in the Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902) and was the headquarters of the PADMT. (Prince Alfred District Mounted Troops)

Activities at Prince Albert include star gazing, horse riding, hunting, hiking, mountain biking and fossil searching. Also available is a tractor ride that starts from De Bergland, a lovingly restored home on a nearby farm.

There are some self-catering lodges in the area. These have most of the amenities that you would need for a lovely holiday including air conditioning and a pool for those hot summer months.

Also available are some bed and breakfast accommodation. Some of these also have pools and normally offer outside braai/barbeque facilities.
