Outjo District covers a broad sweep of north-western Namibia, encompassing dry plains, rugged hills, seasonal riverbeds and scattered settlements. The name Outjo is generally derived from the Otjiherero word meaning ‘small hill’, referring to the gently elevated terrain around the town of Outjo. The district takes its name from this historic settlement, which developed as an important centre in the interior. Outjo itself was established as a German military station in the late 19th century, adding a layer of colonial history to an area with a much older indigenous heritage.
