Okaukuejo Accommodation

Okaukuejo is one of the best-known rest camps in Namibia, positioned beside the southern edge of the vast Etosha Pan and surrounded by open plains, mopane woodland and dry savannah. Its famous floodlit waterhole makes it an especially rewarding destination for wildlife enthusiasts, with animals often gathering close enough to observe from the safety of the camp.

The name Okaukuejo is generally associated with the Herero language and is understood to refer to a place of women, although interpretations of the name vary. The settlement originally developed as a German military and veterinary station, established in the early 20th century, before becoming part of the tourism infrastructure of Etosha National Park.

The waterhole is the camp’s main attraction. During the dry season, when natural water becomes scarce, elephants, giraffes, zebras, springbok and other animals regularly visit. Black rhino are also among the prized sightings, particularly after dark when the floodlights illuminate the water. Sitting quietly beside the waterhole can be one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in Namibia.

Okaukuejo is also a useful base for exploring the western and central sections of Etosha. Game drives across the surrounding plains can produce sightings of lion, cheetah, hyena and large herds of antelope. Birdwatching becomes particularly rewarding after seasonal rains, when temporary pools appear across the normally dry landscape.

The camp lies in the Oshikoto Region, whose name is linked to the numerous sinkholes and depressions characteristic of northern Namibia. The Etosha landscape itself is dominated by the immense white expanse of the pan, a former lake bed that stretches for hundreds of kilometres and can occasionally hold shallow water after exceptionally good rains.

For travellers, Okaukuejo combines wildlife, history and scenery in a uniquely atmospheric setting. Whether watching a lone black rhino approach the waterhole at night or following elephants across the sun-baked plains, the experience captures the extraordinary character of Etosha.
