Nieuwoudtville

Nieuwoudtville is a small town situated in the far west of the region. The town lies on the Bokkeveld Escarpment, an area famous for its unique vegetation. The town came into being in 1897 and, because of its relative high rainfall, is known as the Boland of the Karoo. A few kilometers to the north of the town are the 100m high Nieuwoudtville Falls on the Doring River, and the gorge supports some fascinating flora and fauna. In particular, nesting Booted and Black Eagles, Gymnogene, Lanner Falcons and Black Storks have been witnessed here.

The Nieuwoudtville area is a farming area, and the main products of this region are sheep, wheat and Rooibos tea. It is a small town, its warm, sandstone buildings shelter in a well-treed hollow in a flat landscape covered by wheat, heather and proteas. Eight kilometres west of town, the Vanrhyns Pass offers splendid views on the descent to Namakwa's coastal terrace.
