Mooketsi Accommodation

Mooketsi is a small agricultural settlement in Limpopo’s fertile Lowveld, surrounded by citrus orchards, bushveld and the rolling hills of the northern Drakensberg. Situated south-west of Tzaneen, it is a quiet rural destination where farming remains central to everyday life and the landscape changes dramatically between cultivated valleys and rugged natural country.

The name Mooketsi comes from the Mooketsi River, which flows through the area. It is generally understood to derive from a local Northern Sotho name associated with the river and its surroundings. The watercourse has long been important to settlement and agriculture, helping make the surrounding valley productive despite Limpopo’s generally dry climate.

Citrus farming is the defining feature of Mooketsi, with oranges, lemons and other fruit grown extensively in the surrounding countryside. Travellers passing through during harvest can often find fresh local produce at roadside stalls and farm outlets. The peaceful roads through the orchards also make for pleasant scenic drives, particularly when the trees are in blossom.

Mooketsi is well placed for exploring the wider attractions of the Lowveld. Nearby Tzaneen offers access to waterfalls, indigenous forests, mountain viewpoints and a variety of outdoor activities, while the route eastwards leads towards Phalaborwa and the wildlife-rich Kruger National Park. Birdwatchers will find plenty to enjoy in the mixture of farmland, woodland and riverine habitats.

Within the Kruger National Park & Mopani Region, Mooketsi provides a glimpse of the agricultural side of Limpopo that can easily be overlooked in favour of its famous wildlife. Its citrus heritage, river valley setting and relaxed rural atmosphere make it an appealing stop for travellers who enjoy exploring beyond the main tourist routes.
