Mariental Accommodation

Mariental is a small but important town in southern Namibia, set beside the usually dry Fish River and surrounded by the wide, sun-baked plains of the Kalahari fringe. It is one of those places where the vastness of the landscape is immediately apparent, yet its position on Namibia’s main transport routes has given it a practical importance far beyond its modest size.

The town was established in the early 20th century and takes its name from Maria Brandt, the wife of Herman Brandt, a local farmer who settled in the area. ‘Tal’ or ‘Thal’, from German, means ‘valley’, giving the name the approximate meaning of ‘Maria’s Valley’. The arrival of the railway in 1908 transformed Mariental, linking it with Windhoek to the north and Keetmanshoop to the south and establishing the settlement as a key agricultural and transport centre.

The town’s most prominent landmark is the Hardap Dam, built across the Fish River just outside Mariental. One of Namibia’s largest dams, it creates a surprisingly green oasis in the otherwise arid landscape and supports irrigation, boating, fishing and a variety of birdlife. The surrounding Hardap Recreation Resort is particularly attractive for visitors wanting to combine wildlife viewing with water-based activities. Springbok, gemsbok, kudu and other hardy species can be found in the wider area.

Mariental is also an excellent base for discovering the distinctive landscapes of southern Namibia. The surrounding plains and dunes are beautiful in the soft light of sunrise and sunset, while the clear skies offer superb opportunities for stargazing. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out around the dam, where water attracts species that are uncommon in the surrounding dry country.

Situated in the Hardap Region, Mariental is a useful stop along the B1 between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop. Its combination of railway heritage, wildlife, water and dramatic desert scenery makes it far more than simply a convenient overnight halt.
