Lephalale Accommodation

Lephalale is a bustling regional town in northern Limpopo, set between broad expanses of bushveld and the Limpopo River. Formerly known as Ellisras, it serves as an important commercial and industrial centre, while its location also makes it a useful gateway to the wildlife-rich countryside of the far northern Waterberg.

The town was renamed Lephalale in 2002, taking its new name from the Lephalale River. The river’s name comes from the local Sepedi language and is commonly interpreted as referring to a river or watercourse, although the precise meaning is sometimes explained differently. The earlier name, Ellisras, honoured the Ellis family, who were among the early European settlers in the area during the nineteenth century.

Lephalale’s modern identity is strongly linked to coal and energy. The enormous Grootegeluk coal mine, together with the Matimba and Medupi power stations, has made the area strategically important to South Africa’s electricity and mining industries. The industrial landscape is a striking contrast to the surrounding bushveld, and provides an insight into the scale of the country’s mineral and energy infrastructure.

Nature provides a different side to the town. The surrounding countryside supports abundant birdlife and wildlife, while nearby reserves and farms offer opportunities for game drives, fishing and outdoor activities. The Mokolo River and its associated dam are particularly attractive for anglers, water-based recreation and birdwatching, with the bushveld providing a scenic backdrop.

The town’s position in the Waterberg Region also places it within an area of considerable archaeological and cultural significance. Ancient rock-art sites, stone tools and evidence of early human occupation occur throughout the wider region, while the landscape’s rugged hills and savannah support a rich diversity of plants and animals.

Lephalale is therefore a town of contrasts: a major industrial hub surrounded by open bushveld and wildlife country. For travellers, it offers a practical base from which to explore the northern Waterberg while providing an intriguing glimpse into the industries that underpin modern Limpopo.
