Koringberg

Koringberg is a charming village in the Western Cape’s Swartland region near the Great Berg River and Koringberg mountain, an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The village originated as a railway hub from which wheat was despatched. It is home to the original fountain used by early Khoi-San inhabitants, including Harry the Strandloper (‘beach walker’) during the time of Jan van Riebeek.

Koringberg lies in a flatland area, rich in mineral deposits. It has 360 degree views of Table Mountain, the Cederberg and Winterhoek Mountains in the distance, making it one of the most beautiful weekend destinations from Cape Town. After the winter rain, the surrounding green wheat fields turn to shades of gold.

Popular activities include: hiking or mountain biking through indigenous Rhenosterveld; clay pigeon shooting, fly-fishing on the Berg River and water sports at Misverstand (misunderstood) Dam. The Swartland Wine Route and nearby nature reserves and historical sites make a wonderful day’s outing and there is also a guided mountain bike day tour.
