Hennenman

Generally settlements that sprung up in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality of the Free State province of South Africa were supported by the mining industry, but one town in particular breaks that mould. Hennenman is a small town which is supported by agriculture rather than the mining industry. Formerly denoted as Ventersburg Road and renamed after a local Afrikaner P.F. Hennenman, from Swartpan Farm, Hennenman built as a single railway station. In 1944, black South Africans were confined to a segregated enclave in southern Hennenman. During apartheid, this area was cleared by order of the government and nearly all the residents at that time were relocated to a new township some fifteen kilometres away, Vergenoeg which translated from Afrikaans means far enough. This township is now known as Phomolong. On 5 December 2000, Hennenman was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality with the nearby city of Welkom and the municipalities of Allanridge, Odendaalsrus, Ventersburg and Virginia.
