Lephalale, formerly known as Ellisras, is a lively regional town set against the broad bushveld landscapes of northern Limpopo. The town was originally known as Ellisras, after the Ellis family, early settlers who established themselves in the area during the nineteenth century. The name was changed to Lephalale in 2002, taking its name from the Lephalale River. In Setswana, the name is generally associated with the river’s course or movement, although interpretations of the precise meaning vary. The river itself remains an important feature of the surrounding landscape.

Lephalale has a strong connection with South Africa’s energy and mining industries. The nearby Grootegeluk coal mine and the Matimba and Medupi power stations have played a major role in the development of the town, creating a striking contrast between its industrial importance and the largely rural landscape surrounding it.
