Dyasons Klip Settlement

Dyasons Klip is a small settlement west of Upington, set amid the dry plains and irrigated farming country of the Orange River valley. With its combination of agricultural heritage, an intriguing history and a growing connection to renewable energy, it offers a different perspective on the Northern Cape beyond the better-known towns and attractions.

The name comes from the farm Dyason’s Klip, whose history stretches back to the late 19th century. The “Klip” in the name is Afrikaans for “stone” or “rock”, while Dyason refers to the family name associated with the property. The farm was granted to Albert Louw in 1893, and its later history includes land disputes and changes of ownership that reflect the complicated story of land and farming in the region.

Dyasons Klip also has an important place in the history of the 19th-century frontier. In the 1870s, the area was involved in conflict during the Korana wars, with fighting taking place around Dyasons Klip and nearby Kanoneiland. Today, little of this turbulent past is immediately apparent, but the surrounding landscape carries stories of communities, farmers and colonial forces competing for control of the Orange River region.

The settlement’s modern identity is increasingly linked to agriculture and solar power. The dry climate and abundant sunshine have made the wider area well suited to large-scale renewable-energy projects, including solar photovoltaic facilities. These installations form an interesting modern contrast to the traditional sheep and cattle farming that has long characterised the district.

The surrounding countryside is also surprisingly productive thanks to irrigation from the Orange River. Vineyards and other crops thrive in the fertile river valley, creating a vivid contrast with the arid veld beyond. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives through the farming country, while birdwatching, photography and stargazing are particularly rewarding.

Dyasons Klip lies within the Kalahari & Diamond Fields Region, close to Upington and the Orange River. For travellers exploring this part of the Northern Cape, it offers an appealing blend of rural landscape, frontier history and modern innovation – a reminder that even in this remote, sun-baked corner of South Africa, the landscape continues to evolve.
