Blydeville is a small residential area on the outskirts of Upington, set in one of the Northern Cape’s most remarkable contrasts: a lush, irrigated river valley surrounded by dry Kalahari landscapes. Its proximity to the Orange River gives the area a greener character than the surrounding semi-desert, while Upington’s attractions make it a convenient base for exploring the region.

The name Blydeville is Afrikaans in character, with “blyde” meaning “happy” or “joyful”, and “ville” derived from the French word for town. The name therefore carries the sense of a “happy town” or “joyful settlement”. Blydeville developed as part of Upington’s expansion and is closely connected to the town’s agricultural and residential growth along the Orange River.

One of the greatest pleasures of visiting the area is discovering just how productive this apparently harsh landscape can be. Irrigation from the Orange River supports vineyards, orchards and other crops, creating ribbons of green against the surrounding red and ochre terrain. Wine and dried fruit are particularly important to the local economy, and visitors can explore wineries and farm stalls in the wider Upington district.

The Orange River is the natural focus for outdoor activities. Boat trips, fishing, canoeing and birdwatching provide opportunities to enjoy the river, while the riverfront around Upington is particularly attractive in the cooler hours of morning and late afternoon. The nearby Kalahari landscape also offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, scenic drives and photography.

For a taste of local history, the wider Upington area has strong associations with the early missionary and agricultural development of the Orange River valley. The Kalahari-Oranje Museum, housed in the historic Mission Church complex, explores the history of the town and the communities that developed around the river.

Blydeville lies within the Kalahari & Diamond Fields Region, and its green riverine setting provides a striking contrast to the arid landscapes found elsewhere in the Northern Cape. It may not be a destination in its own right, but its position near Upington makes it a useful and pleasant base for experiencing the region’s combination of river, vineyards, desert scenery and wide-open skies.
