Augrabies is a small settlement in a landscape defined by one of South Africa’s most spectacular natural sights: the mighty Orange River plunging through a granite gorge in a thunderous cascade. Surrounded by rugged hills, vineyards and arid plains, the area provides a striking contrast between desert scenery and the life-giving waters of the river.
The name Augrabies is derived from the Khoekhoe word Aukoerebis, generally translated as “place of great noises” or “place of great waters”, a fitting description of the waterfall and the roaring river that dominates the landscape. The name was recorded by early European travellers and later adapted into its present form. The settlement itself developed in the wider Orange River farming district, where irrigation has made it possible to cultivate crops despite the surrounding aridity.
The main attraction is Augrabies Falls National Park, where the Orange River cuts through the ancient granite landscape. The waterfall is particularly impressive after good rains, when enormous volumes of water surge through the gorge. Viewpoints and walking trails provide different perspectives of the falls and surrounding scenery, while the park is home to klipspringers, kudu, gemsbok, springbok and numerous bird species.
The area is also known for its vineyards and dried-fruit production, made possible by irrigation from the Orange River. A scenic drive through the surrounding farming country reveals a surprisingly green landscape in places, with vineyards and orchards contrasting sharply with the rocky desert beyond.
For adventurous visitors, the wider region offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife viewing, while the exceptionally dry climate and clear skies make sunset and stargazing particularly rewarding.
Augrabies lies in the Kalahari & Diamond Fields Region, close to the Namibian border and within easy reach of the Orange River’s spectacular natural landscapes. Whether visiting for the waterfall, the wildlife or simply the remarkable meeting of river and desert, Augrabies offers an unforgettable glimpse of the Northern Cape at its most dramatic.
