Auasblik, Windhoek

Auasblik is a residential area on the southern side of Windhoek, set against the dry hills and broad valleys that surround Namibia’s capital. Although primarily a suburban neighbourhood rather than a tourist destination in its own right, its location provides a useful base for experiencing the city while remaining close to the rugged landscapes that define central Namibia.

The name Auasblik combines ‘Auas’, referring to the nearby Auas Mountains, with the Afrikaans ‘blik’, meaning ‘view’ or ‘lookout’. It can therefore be understood as a reference to views towards the Auas range. The mountains form a dramatic backdrop to southern Windhoek and are particularly attractive when illuminated by the warm light of early morning or late afternoon.

Auasblik is well placed for exploring Windhoek’s southern attractions and the wider city. The neighbourhood is within reach of shopping centres, restaurants and everyday amenities, while central Windhoek is easily accessible for visitors wanting to explore museums, historic buildings and Namibia’s capital-city culture.

Nature is never far away. The surrounding hills and open spaces support hardy vegetation and wildlife adapted to Windhoek’s semi-arid climate. Hiking and scenic drives in the nearby mountain areas offer opportunities to experience the landscape beyond the urban environment, while the dry air and elevated setting create excellent conditions for photography and stargazing.

The wider Khomas Region is centred on Windhoek and is characterised by rugged mountains, dry valleys and open highland scenery. The capital’s position between these landscapes gives it a distinctive character: modern urban life sits remarkably close to wilderness.

For travellers, Auasblik is best regarded as part of the broader Windhoek experience rather than a standalone sightseeing destination. Its appeal lies in its setting and accessibility, offering a quieter residential perspective on the capital while placing visitors close to the hills and natural scenery that have helped shape Windhoek’s identity.
