Tucked into the bushveld south of Vaalwater, Alma is a small rural settlement where the quiet beauty of Limpopo’s Waterberg unfolds in broad vistas of koppies, grassland and thick green-grey vegetation. It is an appealing stop for travellers who prefer remote countryside, wildlife and wide-open spaces to busy tourist centres.
Alma lies close to the headwaters of the Mokolo River, which begins in the surrounding countryside where the Sand River and Grootspruit meet. From here, the river cuts through the landscape towards Vaalwater, adding an important natural thread to an area characterised by rugged hills and seasonal waterways. The surrounding countryside is also home to private game reserves, making the area a good base for wildlife experiences and bushveld scenery.
The name Alma is generally associated with the farm on which the settlement developed, although a definitive explanation of the name’s origin is not well documented. Its history is consequently less about grand civic landmarks and more about the farming communities that have shaped this secluded corner of the Waterberg.
For visitors, the real attraction is the landscape. Game drives, birdwatching, hiking and photographic excursions are among the pleasures available at nearby reserves and lodges, while the broader Waterberg offers opportunities for fishing, canoeing and other outdoor adventures. Alma is best appreciated slowly – as a peaceful gateway into the Waterberg’s bushveld wilderness rather than as a conventional sightseeing destination.
