Klein River Lagoon - Hermanus, Overberg

The Klein River Lagoon is a beautiful stretch of sheltered water near Hermanus, where the Klein River meets Walker Bay. Surrounded by the Klein River Mountains, fynbos and coastal vegetation, it provides a peaceful contrast to the more energetic Atlantic-facing beaches of the Overberg. The lagoon extends for roughly 10 - 16 km, from Hermanus to Stanford, depending on how the river and lagoon are measured, and is an important habitat for a wide variety of birdlife.

For visitors, the lagoon is primarily about enjoying the outdoors and getting onto the water. Canoeing and kayaking are popular ways of exploring its calm waters, with guided excursions available for those who want to learn more about the landscape and wildlife. Stand-up paddleboards, fishing kayaks and rowing boats are also available from local operators.

Birdwatching is another major attraction. More than 120 bird species have been recorded around the lagoon, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, spoonbills, flamingos and a variety of waders and waterbirds. Early-morning guided birding trips are particularly rewarding, when the water is calm and the birdlife is active.

Boat cruises provide a more leisurely way to experience the lagoon, with scenic, birdwatching and sunset trips available. Fishing is also popular, while the lagoon's sheltered waters can provide opportunities for swimming when conditions are suitable.

For photographers, the combination of mountains, water, reeds and indigenous vegetation creates attractive scenery throughout the day. Sunset is especially impressive, with the surrounding mountains reflected in the still water. The lagoon can be accessed from the Grotto Beach area near Hermanus, while the river can also be explored from the Stanford side.
