Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre is one of the Free State’s most fascinating heritage attractions, inviting visitors to journey back more than 200 million years to the age of the dinosaurs. Set within the spectacular Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the centre combines palaeontology, local storytelling and interactive displays against a backdrop of towering golden sandstone cliffs.
The name Kgodumodumo comes from Sesotho folklore and refers to a legendary giant creature said to have terrorised local communities before being defeated by a brave young hero. The story provides an imaginative link between traditional Basotho culture and the prehistoric creatures whose fossils have been discovered in this part of the Free State.
Inside the centre, visitors can explore dinosaur fossils, life-sized models, multimedia displays and hands-on exhibits explaining the ancient history of the region. A particular highlight is the story of Massospondylus, an early dinosaur whose fossilised eggs and embryos were discovered in the surrounding rocks. These remarkable finds provide valuable clues about dinosaur reproduction and development.
The centre also explains the geological forces that shaped Golden Gate’s distinctive landscape. Ancient rivers, deserts and other geological processes created the sandstone formations that now glow in shades of gold, orange and red, particularly in the late afternoon. The result is a fascinating connection between the prehistoric world beneath the ground and the dramatic scenery above it.
The centre forms part of a visit to Golden Gate Highlands National Park, where travellers can combine the dinosaur experience with scenic drives, hiking, wildlife viewing and visits to historic rock-art sites. The surrounding Maloti Mountains provide spectacular opportunities for photography and outdoor exploration.
Situated in the Eastern Free State region, Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre offers a memorable blend of science, folklore and landscape. For families, dinosaur enthusiasts and curious travellers alike, it provides an engaging way to discover the extraordinary prehistoric story hidden beneath one of South Africa’s most beautiful mountain landscapes.
